About Us

Meet the Founders of MotherCircle

Both Kimberly and Jessica are multi-generational Californians raised in San Diego, CA.

They are the mothers of daughters, and have dedicated their lives and works to creating a world where our daughters understand their bodies and their cycles, and those bodies and cycles are respected.

Kimberly’s been teaching MotherCircle for five years. In January 2023, Jessica and Kimberly set out to formalize the teachings and develop a curriculum so that women all over the world can gather mothers in person.

They can be found in coffee shops all around town, where they try to escape the dishes and dog hair, so that they can think straight and support mothers everywhere in getting the care and connection they need through MotherCircle.

Why we created MotherCircle.

We created MotherCircle as a landing pad for mothers to gather, learn and share their experiences as mothers – physically, sexually, emotionally, spiritually, and archetypally.

For the past five years, mothers from five continents and over thirty countries have gathered online to share this journey.

The power of these gatherings, the soaring negative maternal mental health statistics, and the desire to create a better birth and sexual health climate for our daughters and the generations to come led us to develop the MotherCircle Facilitator training in 2023.

We want all women to be supported in physiological recovery from childbirth, which is at the core of valuing women during the transition to motherhood.

We joined forces to synthesize and distill our practice wisdom and make it available to women everywhere who also feel called to lead.

Our intention has been to create something simple, powerful, and deep to set in motion authentic dialogue and gathering in hopes of building and strengthening motherculture everywhere.

When women are supported in this way, babies thrive, children thrive, relationships thrive, and communities thrive.

About Kimberly

Kimberly Ann Johnson - Founder

My life and psyche were completely rearranged by motherhood sixteen years ago.

Nothing I knew about yoga, meditation or my pelvic floor seemed to help me at all after going through the portal of childbirth.

It took me 6 ½ years to put my body and self back together, to “recover” postpartum.

I have been a single mother since my one daughter, Cecilia, was 9 months old.

Knowing that it didn’t have to be as hard to understand postpartum healing as it was for me, I wrote The Fourth Trimester, which has now been translated into 8 languages and is an early motherhood classic, recommended by Kaiser Permanante, and doula and yoga trainings all over the world.

I have worked one-on-one hands-on, hands-in with women helping them heal from birth injuries and birth traumas, fertility challenges, gynecological procedures, and sexual boundary repair for over 10 years.

“It gave me concrete tools for dealing with overwhelm; wisdom for navigating motherhood in general, the felt and known sense that I'm not alone on this journey, even the aspects
that feel unique to me (and therefore isolating)”

About Jessica

Jessica Connolly - Founder

My world didn’t only turn upside-down after giving birth, it exploded into a million pieces and came back together looking like a different planet.

I am now the mother of four daughters, ages 6-16. It wasn’t until I gave birth to my first daughter at age 28 that I felt connected to my body and awakened to a deeper understanding of feminine wisdom.

I felt grief – I walked away from my career as a biologist to be with my babies.

I felt my broken lineage – where is the grandmother wisdom?

Raising daughters has brought a fiery urgency to tend to my own healing, and to create a legacy of grounded wisdom for my daughters.

I became a birthworker, holistic coach, and eventually a circle leader committed to the practice and sharing of wisdom.

I was raised in a faith community and have had extensive experience in leadership, group worship and the sharing and exchange of information in non-traditional way which allows me to bring a depth of experience to the circles, retreats and online classes at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern science.

I felt the isolation of motherhood and I felt the isolation of mothers all around me.

I also felt an ancient pathway of truth close by, but I didn't know how to access it.

There was a quiet whisper in my bones, but outside of me was the all consuming, shouting demands of motherhood and no one was talking about what the heck was really happening – in my body, my heart and my spirit.

I knew there was a different story – a deeper story – to share with my daughters about womanhood and motherhood which meant that I had to go first. I would find the pathway and live it myself.

I’ve undertaken the task of untangling the gifts from that training and upbringing and bring a depth of experience to the circles, retreats and online classes at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern science, for women who want to discover the pathway of feminine wisdom, for themselves and for their children.
